Mariposa Avenue

Site Analysis

Peggy & Kit wanted an attractive space for a vegetable garden and sitting area that worked with their mature trees in their existing courtyard in Boulder, Colorado. Challenged by the shade, they also wanted to convert some grass to colorful shade-tolerant plants.

    Solutions

» To work with mature trees and the existing courtyard to make a sitting area

    • We experimented with a couple of small flagstone patios but ultimately settled on a concept that included an innovative circular deck around one of their existing shade trees
    • This preserved the roots of the tree and minimized the impact of construction while also, giving them a wonderful shady reprieve

» To find a space for a vegetable garden

    • We sought out the sunniest spots for the vegetable garden & the remaining turf

» To convert the grass to more colorful shade tolerant plantings

    • Chose a soft pink/purple/white color palette for the perennials
